DEY L.P. Provides $25,000 Grant to National Emphysema/COPD Association
Funding to support NECA’s COPD patient/family outreach and education programs
Napa, CA, November 7, 2002 - Dey L.P., a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on prescription drug products for the treatment of selected respiratory diseases and allergies, has made an unrestricted grant for $25,000 to the National Emphysema/COPD Association (NECA). Dey’s grant will support NECA’s activities in developing resource materials for the COPD community, especially patient and family support groups. This information will include materials to help COPD patients and their families better understand the disease, the range of available treatments, and social support options. It will also include practical tools that they can use to improve their quality of life.
“As the manufacturer of DuoNeb®, the only FDA-approved dual-therapy nebulizer solution for COPD, Dey is committed to providing the highest quality therapeutics to treat this devastating disease,” said Mel Engle, President and CEO of Dey. “We understand the daily, lifelong struggle that marks the lives of COPD and emphysema patients and, in recognition of November as National COPD Month, are pleased to partner with NECA to enhance their education and other outreach activities to COPD patients and their families.”
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, also known as COPD, is a chronic and degenerative disease of the lungs caused by blockages of the airways. Its most common manifestation is a combination of emphysema and chronic bronchitis, with symptoms consisting of shortness of breath, chronic coughing, and increased lung secretions. These symptoms, which can severely limit patients’ ability to participate in work and leisure activities, often isolate patients and their caregivers. Sixteen million people have been diagnosed with COPD, and it is estimated another 16 million have the disease but are as yet undiagnosed. In the United States, COPD is the fourth leading cause of death, causing more than 100,000 deaths annually.
Kristen Cicchese, Group Product Director at Dey, commented, “We have chosen to support NECA because NECA supports patients. The debilitating aspects of living with COPD are so monumental that patient support and disease management are absolutely critical. The better informed that patients and their families are about how to manage the condition, the better chance they have of living full and productive lives. This grant is our way of saluting NECA’s contributions to improving the lives of the patients who live with COPD.”
NECA provides support, advocacy, networking, and education programs in partnership with complementary organizations, and promotes public awareness campaigns to increase research and improve prevention, early detection, and care of emphysema and other COPD patients.
Barbara Rogers, President and Chairman of Board of NECA, commented, “Our primary goal -- to empower COPD patients to manage their disease so as to maximize their quality of life – can be reached through increasing patients’ understanding both of their condition and of the treatment options that exist to treat it. Commitment and support from sponsors such as Dey will enable us to get the word out to an ever-wider number of people affected by this major respiratory disease and empower them to participate in their own disease management and care.”
